Gmail updates its chat interface – smoother, cleaner chat window…

                     Gmail's new chat window

Hey Boys and Girls,
Commodore 64 here to give a quick heads up about Gmail. Seems they’ve upgraded their chat window to look smoother and cleaner than ever. Hopefully it will be more compliant.
I’ve been using gmail for a while, and so has my wife. In her place of work, they haven’t gotten around to updating their browsers, so she is stuck using good old IE6, which doesnt offer many options along the lines of gmail chat. Most of the features are disabled, save for actually chatting.
My hope is that they’ve given her some more features to play with…
In the meantime, i just thought it interesting to point out this slight facelift on the good old Gmail chat box.
Oh and by the way, Gmail has added some animated emoticons as well, namely the rocker dude emoticon, which you can get by typing the following characters:
\m/ x-( \m/
-enjoy

Log into Gmail and Google Apps at the same time.

Check out this post fromm the Google Blog:
Google is rolling out a feature I mentioned in a previous post: signing in to multiple Google accounts simultaneously from the same browser. When you go to the Google accounts page, you might see a new option: “multiple sign-in”. If you don’t see the new feature, it will probably be enabled soon.
gmail multiple sign in Log into Gmail and Google Apps at the same time.
After clicking on the “change” link, Google informs that this is an advanced feature and that it will only work for Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Sites, Google Reader, Google Voice, App Engine and Google Code. When multiple sign-in is enabled, a drop-down is displayed next to your email address at the top of the page, so you can quickly switch to a new account.
“If you use multiple sign-in, the first account you sign in to will be your default account. If you visit other Google products that don’t support multiple accounts after you’ve signed in, you will automatically sign in to your default account for that product. If you sign out of any Google product while signed in to any account, you will be signed out of all your Google Accounts at once.” (Google help center)
gmail multiple sign in 2 Log into Gmail and Google Apps at the same time.
When you enable this feature, the most significant change is that you’ll see a new drop-down next to your email address in Gmail and other supported Google products. Click on the drop-down and you can sign in to a new Google Account without signing out from the previous account.
Another change is that Google’s URLs include a different number for each account: http://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/, http://mail.google.com/mail/u/1/, etc.
gmail multiple sign in 3 Log into Gmail and Google Apps at the same time.
Google’s help center explains that Google’s services didn’t allow you to sign it to multiple accounts at the same time using the same browser because Google uses sign-in cookies that only let you sign in with one account at a time. Obviously, you can use multiple browsers, Chrome’s incognito mode, IE8′s “new session” feature, multiple profiles, but the new Google feature makes things easier. Now you can read your messages from two or more Gmail accounts by opening Gmail in multiple tabs.

There are some known issues related to multiple sign-in: this feature is not available on mobile devices, Google Calendar’s gadget doesn’t work properly in Gmail, you can no longer use offline Gmail and offline Google Calendar and the “note in Reader” bookmarklet only works for the default account.
{ Thank you, Stefan and Max. }

Did you know that? This saves me time from logging into and out of Google accounts all day long.

How to Lead a Greener Life with the Internet

green internet 300x199 How to Lead a Greener Life with the InternetGoing green can give some people the blues. Trying to make the world a better place often involves some serious life changes, and this can take a lot of people out of their comfort zones, making the entire going green process a counterproductive activity. In this day and age, however, creating a greener environment is as simple as the click of a mouse. You may already be helping your environment without even knowing it. Here are a few ways we can all use the internet to lead a greener life.

Download Music

Arguably the easiest step is one that is already being done by millions: get your music online. Whether it is through iTunes, Pandora, or others, listening and grabbing music from the internet means that there’s no need for packaging, handling, transportation, or warehouses. Instead, the music gets transferred right to your computer. What could be greener than that? It’s pretty convenient too.

Reusing Used Goods

For things that are not as easy to transfer as music, there are always buy/sell/trade sites such as Craigslist. While it might not seem green at first, nothing helps out the environment more than buying from the people around you and putting to good use what is essentially trash. Buying local used goods helps not only reduce landfill clutter but also cuts down on the transportation and packaging of new materials. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, especially when you’re getting involved in your local community.

For another similar site that is explicitly dedicated to helping those around you, try Freecycle.org. It is a fantastic site where people give away things they don’t need to whoever asks for them. Get rid of your old broken down TV instead of throwing it away, and it could live a new life in someone else’s home.

DIY

Speaking of broken down TVs, do not throw anything if you can repair it first. If you do not have the skills, don’t worry! DoItYourself.com has great guides on how to fix just about anything, helping you save your money and the earth as well. DIY projects also help you learn valuable skills and gain self-confidence. Few things make you feel better about yourself than fixing your own broken down appliances and furniture.

Know Your Greens

If you still cannot fix it, and you cannot do without it, your best bet is to head to EnergyStar.gov and gather information about the products you need. Staying informed about your future purchase is both good for the environment and your wallet. The cheapest option is not always the most cost-efficient once you factor in the cost of operations and the impact it could have on your utility bill every month. As they say, knowledge is power, and electronics are getting more efficient every day.

Green ISPs

Do not forget the internet itself! Some internet service providers (ISPs) are going green as well. Because the internet is so entrenched in our daily lives and it is so widespread, any steps ISPs take to go green will be similarly large and impactful. Even something as simple as going paperless and making monthly billing statements online reduces the impact of hundreds of thousands of envelopes and paper slips, not to mention ink that simply does not need to be used. Some ISPs make sure that their resources are powered by solar or wind energy instead of gas or coal power, increasing the green factor even further exponentially. Some internet service providers go as far as to hold a sweepstakes for a hybrid vehicle as well as other green giveaways to promote their paperless ordering!
So as you can see, sometimes you can make multiple steps at once. If you’re diligent, and use the right resources, you can take two steps forward and no steps back, and walk your way into the green future.

How to Backup, Restore or Deploy Windows VPN Settings

Here is a great recent post from our good friends over at Bauer-Power:
I am a huge fan of Microsoft’s VPN built into Routing and Remote Access. For me it is the easiest system to configure, and deploy. Plus it isn’t limited on how many users can connect to it like say a Cisco VPN where you might be able to have 10 concurrent users, and if you need any more you have to pay for more licenses. Lame sauce I say!
I also like Microsoft’s latest VPN technology, Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol, or SSTP for short. It’s as easy to setup and configure as PPTP, but it’s more secure because it uses SSL encryption. Plus the only port you have to open up on the firewall is 443. Easy peasy!
Finally, the last thing I like is that if you use a Microsoft VPN, you can use the built in Network and Sharing Center in Windows to configure your settings. You don’t need a third party client like you do with Cisco, Sonicwall or Netscaler VPN’s. That means less overhead, and less software you have to take care of. Pure win!
What if you don’t want to write up a tutorial on how to setup a connection in Network and Sharing Center for your users? Sure it’s easy for you to go through the Setup a New Connection or Network wizard because you’re the IT guy. For the young lady in sales though, you probably should have a PhD in nuclear physics to set the thing up. Why not configure it once on your computer, backup your settings, and restore it on her computer? Sounds like a good idea right? Well it,s actually easy to do.
  • Go through the Set Up a Connection or Network wizard in Windows to configure your VPN settings (SSTP, PPTP, L2TP etc)
How to Backup, Restore or Deploy Windows VPN Settings
  • When done copy rasphone.pbk from %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\PBK\ on your computer
  • When you are ready to restore it, paste rasphone.pbk in %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Network\Connections\PBK\ on the computer you want to restore it on.
Easy right? Since all you need to do is keep a copy of rasphone.pbk, which is just a text file that can be edited in Notepad, you can easily deploy your Windows VPN settings using a startup script or something!
The next time the user logs into windows, they will see their automatically configured Windows VPN when they click on their network icon in the system tray!

Firefox advises users to disable McAfee’s ScriptScan software.

t’s the last thing McAfee would want users to hear about one of its products, but the Firefox browser is advising users to disable McAfee’s ScriptScan software, saying that it could cause “stability or security problems.”
SriptScan ships with McAfee’s VirusScan antivirus program. It’s designed to keep Web surfer’s safe by scanning for any malicious scripting code that might be running in the browser. But according to Mozilla it has an unintended side-effect: It can cause Firefox to crash… a lot.
In a note posted to its website, Mozilla said that the add-on “causes a high volume of crashes,” and is “strongly encouraging” users to disable the software. The warning applies to all users of version 14.4.0 and below of the plugin, Mozilla said.
The Firefox browser started popping up warning messages Monday, advising that users disable the software
In McAfee user forums, there is a smattering of complaints about the Firefox problem.
The problem affects Firefox 7 users, according to Francie Coulter, a McAfee spokeswoman. “McAfee has identified the cause and is working actively with the Firefox team to resolve this issue and expects to roll out an update shortly,” she said in an email message.

New Collection Of BSNL 3G Hack

By the introducing 3G services by various cellular companies in India, there has been a surge of information on the Internet regarding various hacking methods and tips and tricks for getting unlimited 3G service for free or accessing 3G services with 2G SIM. The top most targets of these hacking methods have been BSNL and MTNL as they were one of the first companies to introduce 3G in Indian market, some loopholes in their 3G operation structure and their nationwide network coverage. In fact in the initial days it was a common belief among 3G enthusiasts that BSNL was encouraging 3G hacking in order to promote this service among Indian consumers. In this article we will discuss some of the popular tips and tricks for hacking BSNL 3G. Please note that these methods have not been validated by the writer, and may or may not work depending upon the region, handset, and network coverage and time lapse from when the trick was discovered.

Trick to get unlimited BSNL 3G at the price of GPRS

1. The following is the latest trick that promises unlimited BSNL 3G but for some users the speed is dropping after couple of days:
  • You need a 3G enabled mobile and BSNL 3G SIM. You can convert your 2G SIM to #G by recahrging it with Rs1.
  • Recharge the 3G SIM with unlimited 2G plan RC274 for Rs 274. Then recharge with additional Rs10 to get 200MB of free usage.
Most users report getting 3G speed after first or second step. If you are not getting 3G speed then the trick is not working. So no need to follow step mentioned below:
  • If you are getting 3G speed, recharge your account with 2GB data plan RC98 for Rs98. With this plan you can enjoy unlimited 3G as your 2G data usage remains unchanged. You need to set the access point as BSNLGPRS or BSNLPREPAID.
2. The following hack claims to provide unlimited 3G speed for Rs249.
  • You need 3G enabled handset and BSNL 3G SIM.
  • Now make sure you have a balance greater than 250.
  • Send message GPRS249 to 53733 for unlimited GPRS.
  • From Handset menu go to Settings and select network operator as 3G or UMTS or WCDMA.
You can now enjoy unlimited 2G with speed of 3G.
3. This has been one of the most popular trick for getting unlimited BSNL 3G. For few subscribers it is not working anymore as BSNL has put a cap on the data speed. To perform this hack you need to do the following:
  • Have a 3G enabled handset and buy a 2G SIM from BSNL.
  • Make sure you have more than Rs50 balance. Send message GPRS PRE to 53733.
  • After GPRS is activated on your handset, buy an unlimited GPRS plan from BSNL.
  • From your handset menu go to Settings->Phone->Network->Network Mode and choose UMTS option.
  • Perform a manual search for BSNL 3G network. Once found it will be displayed on the handset as a small 3G logo and BSNL name.
If everything works correctly, you will see your signal to change from 2G to 3G.

Trick to get Unlimited 3G Access

Following is another very popular hacking method used by many users to get unlimited access to BSNL 3G network. Some users are reporting that it does not work anymore:
  • You need a 3G enabled phone and a BSNL 2G or 3G SIM.
  • Activate GSM on your os9.2 mobile from network settings.
  • Using web browser open any light website like Google.com and without closing the site change the network settings to UMTS. Now you will get free unlimited 3G.
  • For other phones where UMTS option is not available you need to use dual mode by changing network area. Open any site in 2G then roam to any area where 3G signal is available. You need to change APN to bsnlnet. You may need to restart your phone.
Now you are ready to enjoy unlimited 3G from your mobile. The same trick can be used on PC for accessing unlimited 3G.

Turn Your Mobile Into WiFi Hotspot

With the help of JOIKUSPOT application you can change your mobile in to a internet hotspot . If you have an internet connection via GPRS or 3G you can share the internet connection via wireless network (Wi-Fi). It is very easy to share your internet with multiple people. It will work like a normal HotSpot you can access this from any Wi-Fi enabled devices like Laptop, iPhone, other mobile phones. Using this application you can avoid the complicated setup of PC suite and manual dial up via USB cable or a Bluetooth. This is also a nice idea for 3G Wi-Fi hotspot.

Hack Your Android Phone

You want to take control of your Android phone? By "rooting" your device, a process similar to jailbreaking an iPhone, you can install custom ROMs (images), which add stability and speed improvements to Google's mobile operating system.....

Why Hack Android?

So why would you want to hack your Android phone? For those with older handsets, rooting the device lets you install customized ROMs which can deliver major speed improvements and performance increases. For example, the popular CyanogenMod, created by one of Android's most notable hackers, optimizes performance for both the G1 and MyTouch 3G handsets.

Another good reason to root your phone? Multi-touch. One of the surprising omissions from Google's own Nexus One handset, for example, is the ability to use more than one finger at a time to operate the device. Although available on iPhone from the start, the Nexus One excludes this valuable feature from its mobile operating system. Why? No one knows for sure, but it might have something to do with some patents Apple owns. But that's no matter to the hacker community. Thanks again to cyanogen, Nexus One owners can enable the feature by copying some files over to their device. Other Android owners can perform similar procedures to enable multi-touch Web browsing. But before you can get started with any of these hacks, you first have to root the phone.

How to Root Your Android Phone

However, for novice hackers, "rooting" the phone sounds like it may be easier said than done. Although seemingly intimidating, by following a few simple steps anyone can do this with ease.
Before getting started, remember to back up your phone, including your contacts, SMS messages, files and photos.
  1. The first step is to download and install Superboot, a boot image that, when flashed, will root the device the first time you boot up. You can grab a copy of the Superboot zip file from the Modaco forums here.
  2. Once downloaded, extract the files it contains to a directory on your computer, just like any other zip file.
  3. Now put your Android phone in bootloader mode. (Note, owners of a retail N1 should see instructions here).

    • To do so, turn off the phone, remove the battery, and plug in the USB cable. When the battery icon appears onscreen, pop the battery back in. Now tap the Power button while holding down the Camera key.
    • For those whose Android phones have a trackball, you have an even easier method of doing this: Turn off the phone, press and hold the trackball, then turn the phone back on.
  4. Depending on your computer's OS, do one of the following
    1. Windows: Double click "install-superboot-windows.bat"
    2. Mac: Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type "chmod +x install-superboot-mac.sh" followed by "./install-superboot-mac.sh"
    3. Linux: Open a terminal window to the directory containing the files, and type "chmod +x install-superboot-linux.sh" followed by "./install-superboot-linux.sh"
That's it, your device has been rooted!

If those instructions confused you, check out YouTube for instructional videos instead. Here's one for rooting the  myTouch 3G or G1, and here's one for the  Motorola Droid. Here's  another. There's also an alternative rooting method involving 1 click demoed  here. You get the idea.

Now What?

Now that you've rooted your Android phone, you can get busy adding features, functionality and other hacks. This is the fun part! LifeHacker offers five great reasons to root your phone, for those wondering why you would bother to do this.
Our favorite reasons?

1. Multi-Touch

First of all, Nexus One users can enable multi-touch on their devices. RedmondPie has a good how-to on this:

Meanwhile, Droid owners can hack their phones for multi-touch Web browsing

T-Mobile G1 owners can do this too following the instructions here

2. Mods for Performance Improvements (and More)

G1 and myTouch 3G owners can follow this tutorial to install the popular CyanogenMod on their devices, which boosts performance and speed, among other things. Here's a video tutorial on this via AndroidandMe.com
If you need more information, visit the cyanogenmod Wiki  for all the details on this custom ROM. And stay tuned to the latest Cyanogen news via this website

3. Extra Apps and Features

For more fun hacks, try these:
Anyone with a rooted handset can set up Wi-Fi and Bluetooth tethering using this app .The ever-popularApps2SD software lets you migrate your Android apps over to your SD card, freeing up room on your phone. You can also install custom themes, ringtones and alerts.
